1. Key Considerations Before Home Care

Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is not always suitable for home treatment:

  • If there is significant vision loss, severe pain, severe photophobia, or high fever, seek medical attention immediately for a professional assessment to determine if it is a serious infection or other ophthalmic emergency.
  • Even with mild symptoms, consulting a pediatrician or ophthalmologist before trying any home remedies can prevent unnecessary complications.

Home care is suitable for relatively mild and stable symptoms; it is more of an adjunct than a complete replacement for treatment.

2. Breast Milk: The Most Familiar Natural “Guardian”

For infants still breastfeeding, breast milk is not only food but also a natural defense resource.

  • Breast milk contains various immune factors and antibodies that can help fight some infections and has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Under the guidance and approval of a doctor, some families may use a small amount of breast milk topically when caring for conjunctivitis (red eye) to reduce swelling and redness, especially in infants.

However, any application to the eyes must be handled with strict attention to cleaning methods and frequency of use to avoid the risk of new contamination due to improper handling.

3. Saline Solution: A Cleaning Assistant Close to Tears

The eyes rely on tears to constantly flush out foreign objects and germs, and saline solution, which is close to the composition of tears, is a relatively gentle option.

  • Sterile saline solution (or a doctor-approved saline preparation) can help flush the surface of the eye, removing some secretions and irritants.
  • Salt has certain antimicrobial properties, so moderate and correct use of saline solution can often soothe discomfort while aiding in cleaning the eye environment.

It is important to avoid preparing saline solution of unknown concentration at home and applying it directly to the eyes, especially for children. It is best to use a certified preparation under the guidance of a doctor.

4. Hands and Water: The Simplest Yet Most Crucial Line of Defense

Many cases of red eye are amplified by the repetitive action of rubbing the eyes.

  • Parents and children should avoid rubbing their eyes as much as possible, especially with unwashed hands.
  • Washing hands thoroughly several times a day significantly reduces the chance of bacteria and viruses spreading to the face and eyes.

When eyes feel dry or have a foreign body sensation:

  • Gently rinse the area around the eyes and the base of the eyelashes with clean, cool water to help reduce swelling and the foreign body sensation.
  • Rinse several times a day, but avoid vigorous rubbing or frequent, repeated rubbing of the skin around the eyes.

This seemingly simple habit is often more effective than many complicated procedures.

5. Drink Plenty of Water: Moisturizing from Within to the Eyes

Red eye is sometimes related to overall health; for example, dehydration can make mucous membranes drier and more fragile.

  • Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day. This helps with blood circulation and tear production, ensuring smoother blood supply and self-cleaning of the eyes.
  • Maintaining good hydration also helps metabolize waste products and toxins, enhancing overall recovery.

For everyday hydration, choose plain water, diluted lemon water, or warm, caffeine-free drinks. Caffeinated beverages (such as strong tea, coffee, and some sodas) can worsen dehydration and are not suitable as a regular hydration method.

A child’s eyes often express discomfort before words. Red eyes are not always a sign of serious illness, but they are a clear indication that the body needs rest, cleansing, and a little more patience. By following professional advice, adhering to safety guidelines, and using these simple, gentle home remedies, the redness can often be reduced, allowing your child to see the world with clear eyes again.
